Huxley's soft tyranny, not Orwell's hard one, is the real risk
Postman opens with a contrast that frames the entire book: Orwell's 1984 imagined a society controlled by fear, surveillance, and the deliberate suppression of information. Huxley's Brave New World imagined something almost opposite — a society that requires no suppression because its members have been conditioned to love the entertainments and pleasures that keep them passive and uncritical.
Postman argues that late-twentieth-century America was drifting toward Huxley's version, not Orwell's. Nobody was banning books; people were simply losing the desire and capacity to read demanding ones. Nobody was hiding the truth; the culture was drowning it in so much trivial, entertaining information that serious truth became hard to locate or care about.
The distinction matters because it locates the danger somewhere counterintuitive: not in censorship or repression, but in abundance, pleasure, and distraction, freely chosen. A culture can be undone by what it loves, not just by what it fears.
