Strange loops explain how self-reference generates the feeling of a self

Hofstadter's core concept is the strange loop: a system in which moving through a hierarchy of levels — as in a piece of music, a set of nested rules, or a chain of reasoning — eventually and unexpectedly returns you to where you started, creating a closed, self-referential circuit despite each step moving in a consistent direction. He argues this structure, more than any specific neural mechanism, may be what generates the subjective sense of having a unified self.

A mind, on this view, is a physical symbol-processing system complex enough to build an internal model that refers to itself as an agent among the things it represents — and once that self-referential loop exists, an experience resembling consciousness plausibly follows from the loop itself, not from any additional special ingredient.

This reframes consciousness as an emergent property of sufficiently complex self-modeling systems rather than a separate substance requiring its own explanation.

Takeaway: a system capable of representing and referring to itself may generate the experience of selfhood simply through that recursive structure, without needing anything extra added.
