The factory bargain of obedience for security has broken down

Godin argues that the industrial economy trained generations of workers to trade compliance for stability: show up, follow the manual, don't cause trouble, and a steady paycheck follows. Schools, in his telling, were largely built to prepare children for exactly this bargain, rewarding punctuality and rule-following over original thought.

The problem is that any job reducible to a fixed set of instructions is now a target for automation, outsourcing, or replacement by cheaper labor elsewhere, since a well-documented procedure is precisely what software and distant competitors can copy most easily. The very obedience that once guaranteed safety now guarantees vulnerability.

Godin's conclusion isn't that effort or reliability stopped mattering, but that they stopped being sufficient. The remaining safe ground is work that resists being written down as a procedure in the first place — judgment, initiative, and generosity applied to problems that don't come with instructions. Following the manual perfectly is no longer a safe career strategy — the manual is what's being automated.
