Allied victory depended on managing coalition dysfunction, not avoiding it

Atkinson argues that the Allied war effort in Western Europe was never a smoothly unified machine but a constant, often exhausting exercise in managing friction between American, British, Canadian, and French forces, each bringing different national interests, military doctrines, and wounded pride to the table. Rather than presenting this friction as an embarrassing footnote to victory, Atkinson treats it as central to understanding how the war was actually won: success depended less on eliminating disagreement than on Eisenhower's particular skill at absorbing and defusing conflict without letting it fracture the alliance outright.
