Social change spreads like an epidemic, not a gradient

Gladwell's foundational metaphor is contagion: ideas and behaviors don't diffuse evenly through a population, they behave like a virus — quiet and seemingly negligible for a long stretch, then suddenly explosive once the right conditions align. The moment that explosion begins is the tipping point, and everything before it can look, misleadingly, like nothing is happening at all.

This matters because it explains why so many promising trends appear to "come from nowhere" — Hush Puppies shoes went from nearly discontinued to a fashion phenomenon within a couple of years, driven initially by a small number of downtown Manhattan trendsetters, long before the mainstream noticed anything.

The practical implication is that patience and precision beat brute-force scale — a small, well-targeted push at the right moment can outperform a much larger, poorly targeted one.
