Willpower is a muscle, not a trait

Baumeister's foundational claim is that self-control behaves like a physical muscle rather than a fixed character trait. It can be fatigued by heavy use in the short term, but it can also be strengthened over the long term through regular exercise — small daily acts of restraint build capacity the same way reps build biceps.

This was a genuine break from folk psychology, which treats willpower as something you either have or don't, a stable trait like height. Baumeister's lab work suggested instead that everyone draws from the same kind of tank, and that tank empties with use and refills with rest.

The practical implication is liberating: you don't need to become a fundamentally different person to have more self-control. You need to treat your willpower the way an athlete treats a muscle — training it deliberately, and not scheduling your hardest tests for when it's already exhausted.

One takeaway: don't judge your discipline on a day you've already spent it elsewhere.
